Planning a family reunion in the Smoky Mountains
For a Smoky Mountains reunion, decide first whether everyone needs a shared day-use meeting place or a group campsite. The National Park Service handles those as different reservations. Pick the gathering point before asking relatives to book lodging, and check the current park status again shortly before the trip.
Choose the meeting place before lodging
The park lists reservable picnic pavilions at Cosby, Deep Creek, Greenbrier, Metcalf Bottoms, and other locations, with different capacities and seasonal schedules. Some picnic areas stay open year-round while others close in winter. Build the invitation around the pavilion you can actually reserve, not a generic “meet in the park” pin. The park says pavilions can be reserved up to a year ahead; an unreserved pavilion may be used impromptu, but that is a weak plan for relatives arriving from different places.

A pavilion reservation does not waive the park parking-tag requirement. The park says a vehicle parked longer than 15 minutes needs a valid tag, with an exemption for vehicles displaying qualifying disability plates or placards. Tell each driving household to check the current tag rules and buy its own tag before arrival. This is particularly important when the group is meeting at one site but sleeping in several different towns.

The park has group campsites, but they are tent-only and require reservations. Published site capacities and operating dates differ by campground; generators, trailers, and wheeled camping units are not permitted in those group areas. Ask each household whether tent camping is realistic before treating a group site as a substitute for separate lodging. If the purpose of the weekend is a single shared meal, a day-use pavilion may solve the coordination problem with less equipment.
