How to Change a Live Photo Key Frame on Mac
Open the Live Photo in the Mac Photos app, click Edit, select Adjust, drag the playhead to the chosen frame, and click Make Key Photo to set the still.

To change the key photo of a Live Photo on a Mac, you can double-click the image in the Photos app, drag the video playhead to your preferred frame, and click "Make Key Photo" Apple Support.
Locating Live Photos in the Mac Photos app
The Photos app on Mac allows you to find what you are looking for by media type, which lets you browse all of your time-lapse videos or Portrait mode photos in one place Apple Support. To filter your images, click "Live Photos" below "Media Types" in the app's sidebar Apple Support. If you do not see "Live Photos" listed in the sidebar, hold your pointer over "Media Types" and click the disclosure arrow Apple Support.
Keep in mind that Media Type collections, such as panoramas or bursts, appear only if you actually have that specific media type saved in your photo library Apple Support.
Accessing the Live Photo editing tools
Once you find your image, double-click the Live Photo and then click "Edit" in the toolbar Apple Support. Make sure that "Adjust" is selected in the toolbar above the photo before you use the editing tools to make your changes Apple Support.
For Live Photos that also happen to be Portrait mode photos, you will need to click the Editing tool under the photo to display the specific Live Photo editing tools Apple Support.
Setting and reverting the key photo frame
To select a video frame as your new key photo, drag the playhead to the frame you want and click "Make Key Photo" Apple Support. As a practical suggestion, try dragging the playhead slowly so you can closely evaluate each person's expression before confirming your choice.
If you decide you do not like the result after editing a Live Photo, you can restore it to the original version by clicking "Revert to Original" Apple Support.
How adjustment tools affect Live Photos
When you make edits to a Live Photo, those overall adjustments apply to both the still image and the video inside the Live Photo Apple Support. However, any changes that you make using the markup tools, retouch tool, or red-eye tool will affect only the still image Apple Support.
