How to Copy Text from a PDF in Preview on Mac
To copy text from a PDF on Mac, open the file in Preview, choose Tools > Text Selection, drag over the content, and select Edit > Copy.

You can select and copy text from a PDF opened in Preview, then paste it into another document such as an email message or text document (Apple Support).
Copying standard text in Preview
To copy text, choose Tools > Text Selection, drag over the text, then choose Edit > Copy (Apple Support). As a practical suggestion, you might find it helpful to open a blank word processor file alongside Preview so you have a place ready to paste the information.
Copying vertical columns and image blocks
To copy a portion of text vertically, choose Tools > Text Selection, hold down the Option key as you select the text, then choose Edit > Copy (Apple Support).
Sometimes you may want an image rather than editable text. You can copy a portion of the page as a graphic image by choosing Tools > Rectangular Selection, dragging over a portion of the page, then choosing Edit > Copy (Apple Support).
Accessing selection tools via the Markup Toolbar
You can also use the Text Selection and Rectangular Selection tools in the Markup Toolbar to select and copy text (Apple Support). The Text Selection tool may not be selected; to resolve this, choose Tools > Text Selection, or click the Show Markup Toolbar button, then click the Text Selection button (Apple Support).
Unlocking password-protected PDFs
The PDF may require a password before you can select or copy text (Apple Support). If you encounter this restriction, choose Tools > Show Inspector, click the Encryption Inspector button, then enter the password (Apple Support). As a suggestion, you can ask the family member who originally sent the document if you do not know the required password.
