To manage contributors in a shared album in the Photos app on a Mac, the album creator can invite people, set permissions for adding or managing photos, and remove participants using the Collaborate button in the toolbar (Apple Support). When creating an album, you can decide whether anyone with the link can access it or if access is restricted only to the people you select (Apple Support).

Inviting People to a Shared Album

When setting up a shared album in the Photos app on your Mac, you can choose whether anyone with the link can access the album or only the people you choose (Apple Support). You can also determine whether additional people with the link can request access (Apple Support).

To add contributors to an existing album, double-click the shared album, click the Collaborate button in the toolbar, and click the Add button next to Invite Participants (Apple Support). From there, you can choose how to invite a participant, such as with a text message, or choose Add Access to add a new participant without sending an invitation (Apple Support). When you send an invitation to view a shared album, the person receives an email or notification asking them to join (Apple Support). The person who created the album then receives a notification when someone accepts the invitation to join (Apple Support).

Setting Participant Permissions

The creator of a shared album can set permissions to change what participants are allowed to do (Apple Support). After double-clicking a shared album and clicking the Collaborate button in the toolbar, click the More button next to a person's name to modify their permissions (Apple Support).

You can configure any of the following access levels for a participant:

  • Can View and Comment: Allow the participant to view and comment in the shared album (Apple Support).
  • Can Add Photos: Allow the participant to add photos to the shared album (Apple Support).
  • Can Manage Albums and Photos: Allow the participant to manage albums and photos, including settings (Apple Support).

Additionally, the album's creator, or any participant who has permission to manage the album, can turn album activity notifications off and on (Apple Support).

Sharing with Non-iCloud Users

The creator of a shared album can create a unique iCloud URL to share the album with people who do not use iCloud (Apple Support). Double-click the shared album, click the Collaborate button in the toolbar, and select Public Website (Apple Support). You can then copy the link and paste it into an email or text message to send to the people you want to invite (Apple Support).

Caution: When Public Website is turned on, anyone with the URL can access the album (Apple Support).

Participants who view your shared album on the web cannot comment on the items in it, and they cannot view new comments posted by you or others (Apple Support). To make comments visible to someone without a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, you must post the comments before you invite the person to view the shared album (Apple Support).

Removing a Participant

To remove a contributor's access, double-click the shared album and click the Collaborate button in the toolbar (Apple Support). Next to the person's name, click the More button, choose Remove Participant, and click Done (Apple Support). When you remove someone, they no longer have access to the shared album and its contents (Apple Support).
