A new baby gift from the whole family

New parents are not short of photographs of the baby. They take forty a day. What is scarce, and what a family can supply, is the generation above — the grandmother at the same age, the great-grandfather nobody has seen a picture of, the three of them at six months old side by side.

That is the ask worth making, and it is a different ask from the usual one.

The scarce material is old, not new

Ask a family for baby photographs and you will get recent ones, because those are easy to find. The ones that matter are in a drawer at somebody's mother's house, in an album nobody has opened since a funeral.

So the request has to say so explicitly: not a photo of the baby — a photo of you, or Mum, or Grandad, at about the same age. Otherwise you get thirty pictures taken last Tuesday.

Those photographs are usually the worst ones you have

The oldest photograph in a family is routinely the lowest quality anybody owns, and it is normally the one that matters most. Faded, small, photographed on a phone at an angle, in a frame with the glass still on.

Its condition sets the size you can honestly buy. A damaged snapshot carries a smaller print well and does not survive being enlarged past what the detail supports — there is more on that in how big can you print an old photograph.

The details are what make it about this family

A piece has to read as being about these particular people rather than a generic picture of a baby. That comes from what gets written down: the hospital, the weather, who drove, the name they nearly used instead.

A photograph with no story attached becomes decorative within a year. The story is what somebody reads aloud at the eighteenth birthday.

Timing

There is no deadline here, which is unusual and useful. Most families do this in the first year, and a good many do it around the first birthday when the initial rush has stopped and somebody finally has time to look through what everyone sent. Classic is the common choice.
